A DIY money saving jar is not your typical homemade gift to make and give but it is such a valuable and practical gift to receive.
I recently wrote the article Different Ways To Teach Children Financial Literacy At Home. I share a variety of doable and practical ideas that we as parents can do with our children to help them learn about earning, budgeting, spending and saving money. This is a really hard concept and skill to learn and we may as well start teaching it from an early age. That blog post gave the how-tos for teaching financial literacy but I know my followers and readers also like to get ideas for things they can make. This DIY money saving jar homemade gift is very easy to make. I made three different colour schemes to inspire you with ideas for giving this gift for different occasions. It is perfect for:

Why Do I Prefer A DIY Money Saving Jar Compared To A Piggy Bank?
I love the look of the traditional piggy bank. The term evolved in the middle ages where extra coins were tossed into a clay dish called a pygg. The term ‘piggy’ and the pig figurine evolved over time with a slot at the top to insert coins and a hole with a plug at the bottom to release the coins. The term piggy and the piggy bank are so cute. But I have to admit I prefer a DIY money saving jar for several reasons.
Piggy banks are designed with the intent to make it difficult to get the money out. Plus, most piggy banks are opaque so you cannot see how much money is being saved. The only way to tell is by how heavy it is getting. Between it being a challenge to get the money out and not being able to see how much money is in there it makes it really difficult to track and monitor a savings plan.
You will notice this money jar is painted white except for one vertical stripe that I left clear. This clear transparent stripe is for the stickers spelling the word ‘SAVE’. But more importantly it allows the saver to see how much the money is accumulating in the jar. The clear stripe provides a quick visual.
The money jar was made from a mason jar with a screw top rim that can be easily removed. So whenever you want to see exactly how much money is saved all you have to do is empty the jar rather than shake and shake until there are no more coins as if you were emptying a piggy bank. After counting the money, you can quickly return the coins and bills and replace the screw top rim.
You will also notice that I removed the lid that came with the screw top rim and the mason jar. Instead I designed a clever very easy to make and use cover with a slot for inserting coins and bills!

DIY Money Saving Jar Homemade Gift
Materials For One Jar
- quart size Mason jar with smooth sides
- medium size rim and lid to fit mason jar
- 1-1/2 inch blue painters masking tape
- white paint (chalk paint or Home Fusion Mineral Paint)
- small and medium size craft paint brush or foam brush
- about 1” to 1-1/2” alphabet stickers to spell SAVE
- 3/4″ wide washi tape
- white foam sheet
- pencil
- small scissors
Instructions
Step 1
Apply a strip of 1-1/2” blue painters masking tape down one side of the mason jar from the top to the bottom. Make sure the edges are smooth and sealed.
Step 2
Apply two to three coats of white paint allowing for drying time between each coat. I used a foam brush for the first two coats. I decided to apply a third coat using a narrow craft paintbrush along the taped edges and the medium size brush for the rest of the jar. This last coat went on very quickly and did a nice job giving the jar a solid white paint colour. I also used Fusion Mineral Paint because I had a lot leftover from the Wood Coffee Table Tray Gets New Makeover I made. You can also use white chalk paint and I give a full tutorial how to paint mason jars in Tips For Painting Distressed Mason Jars. You will find the tips very helpful. Just ignore the tips for how to get a distressed look.
Step 3
Apply the alphabet stickers evenly to spell the word SAVE in a vertical line on the unpainted stripe.
Step 4
Apply coordinating coloured washi tape along the painted edge from the top to the bottom. Bring the washi tape over the jar rim and seal inside the jar along the top.
Step 5
Place the mason jar lid right side down on the foam sheet. Trace and cut out the circle shape. Cut out an even + shape in the centre of the circle shape with small scissors.
Tip: Use small scissors to cut out the circle shape and the + in the middle. Smaller scissors make it easier to cut a circular shape.
Step 6
Insert the white foam circle shape inside the mason jar lid. Screw the lid onto the DIY money saving jar homemade gift.
I still have my red plastic piggy bank from when I was a child. It it tucked away in my childhood memory box that I keep stored in the basement. It is empty now and shows a lot of wear and tear. But it does bring back memories from when I was a little girl and how I was able to fill it with the money that I saved. I remember my mother was trying to teach me to be more independent and to walk to Kindergarten with my little friends. For every day that I was able to do it without help I received a nice shiny penny. As the school year progressed that piggy bank became quite full with loads of pennies which I thought was loads of money at that time. Times have changed considerably back then. The Kindergarten was about six blocks away and during those times it was an acceptable distance to walk to school as a five-year-old with her friends. It was also a time when pennies seemed to be a lot of money. I live in Canada and we no longer use pennies in our currency.
April is also Financial Literacy Month. Learning how to be financial literate is so important. Receiving a DIY Money Saving Jar Homemade Gift may not be the top choice on your child’s gift list but it can be a fun gift to receive and an essential gift to use from an early age.
